Now that #Brazil has banned Xitter, where are Brazilian people going?

@o_simardcasanova @wonkothesane Oh please. It’s as easy as Bluesky to sign up.
And I’m not techie at all and run two instances via masto.host and it takes fewer clicks than an Amazon order. But that doesn’t matter, because it’s not a requirement. But it wouldn’t take much to run your own friends-first instance.
But again, your definition of “success” might be much, *much* different than what many existing users here want. That’s not elitism, it’s just a different way of being.

@o_simardcasanova If people want to go to billionaire oligarch owned places like threads/bluesky, fine.

@[email protected] @[email protected] Soooo... you're just here to bitch about "Mastodon" in comparison to the more profitable (for somebody, probably not you) "Bluesky".
K.
Do you read your posts before posting them?
Or maybe you just think everyone on the Internet is a fucking moron?
This is the most transparent brand-stanning bullshit I've seen lately on the fediverse.
Maybe the problem is getting hung up on the idea of "Mastodon"? One Twitter-like throwback software that reminds you of what used-to-be?
Admit it. Twitter is dead and oh well.
Long live independent, free, open-source social media!
Unkillable! -

@o_simardcasanova yup and the sad thing is that bsky is centralised and thus subject to similar centralisation risks as twitter was. It’s a pity mastodon has not been as welcoming

@kcarruthers @o_simardcasanova I share the same concern - to me right now the saving grace for using Mastodon is relying on @elk as web client.
I'm surprised about Bluesky tho; I've been on it since the very beginning but I find it somewhat dead, and only the same like 10 people are tweeting like crazy over there. Threads is having much more variety and I see a lot of non-tech-people migrating to that.

@o_simardcasanova @rscottjones @wonkothesane I've found that there is a fundamental disagreement about the critical importance of adoption & usage.
Despite usage & adoption being the universal metric for social network value, Fediverse flagwavers in a fit of wishful thinking, love to say that "active usage isn't important" & "quality of experience is what matters".
This armchair analysis isn't simply not useful - it's patently wrong. Ask any social network researcher. Usage + Adoption = Value.

@kelset out of curiosity, have you tried the built il webui lately? What do you find better in Elk?
-
@rscottjones @o_simardcasanova @wonkothesane That’s dishonest and filled with cope. It’s not as easy as Bluesky onboarding. Also, it’s not just what users want. The creator of mastodon has come out and said he wants 100 million mastodon users. So their perspective is very in line when you factor in what the creator is aiming for

@idoubtit @o_simardcasanova you don’t know what it’s destined for, you don’t know the future. Besides it’s significantly more diverse, people actually like that in a social platform, that may be a foreign concept to you. But people like to be social on social networks

@o_simardcasanova @notroot @idoubtit At first, I was wondering “What kind of anti-social behavior is he referring to ?”… and then, I read the previous response. Wow… some answers are truly stunning.
Anyway, many good points mentioned, sad outcome for Mastodon, but I also believe it is here to stay, on its niche, just differently ️

@o_simardcasanova @cl3mcg @notroot @idoubtit Yeah, I’m a big booster for “fedi” (can we please get a better name? And yes I know, we cannot )
But the weird “sport team” hostility that people engage in is really a huge problem and HAS been.
I’m very pro-mastodon (fedi) AND Bluesky, but Mastos biggest problem is people who say they’re supporting Mastodon and behaving in a way that’s guaranteed to be offputting.
-
@Grant_M @o_simardcasanova nah I absolutely can. If you can spread lies and continue on the nonsense then I can engage similarly

Mastodon is a social network, not a business.
It does not need to grow at any cost, it does not need to catch "opportunities", it does not need to beat any competence.
It just needs to be a nice platform for people to share and interact. As it already is.
I hope the developers understand that, and keep it that way.
Have fun in bluesky. And when corporative greed transform it in a swamp of ads, trolls, newsbots and shit, as is certainly will, remember you have an account here

@SeverianX @o_simardcasanova "It does not need to grow at any cost"
Definitely agree here. We really should, collectively, focus on improving the fediverse for those who are already here and finally put an and to the harassment folks here have to deal with.
A nice perk of that, of course, is that this may attract more people, but that shouldn't be seen as the goal.
