Loops will be open source, federated, and easy to install/manage!
We are going to release the source code for the backend server and mobile app in the coming months, once we've laid a solid foundation!
In the true spirit of federation, we're also going to build full account migration into Loops, so you can take your (whole) loops.video account to your own server once ready.

@dansup What. It's not free and open from the start ? No trust in it then, sorry.
I was really hoping for an upcoming solution to provide for young people who like this kind of social media, but that's a big showstopper.

@nik The reason I'm not publishing the source code right away is because I want to get the communities input on many tasks and milestones, and it's hard to reach a public release milestone where you encourage people to join only to discover problems with outdated servers.
It will be worth the wait, and every loops.video user will be able to migrate their full account (including posts) to their own or other server once v1.0 is released!

@jsbilsbrough @pixelfed Yes, S3 will be supported.
We estimate you can store 12,000 videos at 20MB each for $5/month with DigitalOcean Spaces
For the backend server, we don't have any specs yet

@dansup As I remember your decisions on pixelfed.social, users under 16 years will be locked out. As a consequence, their voices will not be heard during your community evaluation.
I get why you wouldn't want the responsibility for very young users yourself, but that's the power of federation. If being open from the start, our young community at @Teckids could voice their opinions equally. A single centralised instance for evaluation means sacrificing diversity.

@dansup @pixelfed Looks cool. I just joined the TestFlight as @[email protected] and will try out loops when it ships.

I am not arguing for Pixelfed. I only assumed that your terms of use will be the same for the first centralised loops instance.
Thus, until self-hosting becomes possible, minors will be locked out, and thus be unable to provide their feedback before 1.0.

@dansup Can't wait to self-host this.
