Sigh.

@riley My admin has been working on this for days. I don't know how you could help, but basically, either I can't click (cursor simply won't "take"), or: I click on "reply" and it opens an image from an unrelated toot; I click on "reply" and nothing happens; I click on "like" and it opens a reply window before it lets me Like. I could go on and on.
-
@GottaLaff Ugh. I'm so, so sorry this is happening to you.
-
@GottaLaff @Asbestos it's unfortunate but Safari has definitely taken a down-turn in the past few years when it comes to support/bugfixes.
Can you point to a previous post with the issue?
-
@lisamelton Thank you Lisa. It's driving me NUTS. Now I'm even having trouble on Amazon, on Safari. Clicking on an image doesn't open it. @Asbestos

@GottaLaff @Asbestos sorry I didn't see your description of the issues previously. I'll go back and see.

If it's happening across websites (not just Mastodon) *and* across OS updates then it has to be something in your Safari settings.
I would do this in the order you see them here:
#1: for any website that has the issue, check the website settings for pop-up blockers. Safari has gotten more stringent about these. Note: everytime you change the settings below, the page you are on will be forced to reload. This is normal.
a) I would turn off "Enable Content Blockers” then test the behaviour... if nothing changes turn it back on.
b) If that doesn't work set "Pop Up Windows" to “Allow" and test, if nothing changes turn it back on.
c) If that doesn't work do A) and B) at the same time and test again.#2 Make sure “Enable Javascript" is ON under Safari Preferences—>Security.
#3 Under Safari Preferences—>Advanced make sure "Block all cookies" is OFF.
#4 Last but not least, the Nuclear option is to reset Safari to defaults by removing the its library folder from your account. (You can copy it to another location so you don't lose your bookmarks and things but otherwise all other website data is lost)
a) Quit Safari
b) Go to the “Go” Menu in the Finder and hold down the Option key. You should see a “Library” option appear in the Menu. Select it.
c) In that folder you should see multiple folders with “Safari" in the name.
d) Create a new folder on your Desktop called Backup.
e) Move (or Copy) the folders with Safari in the name into the Backup folder on your Desktop.
f) Once they are in the Backup folder, Delete (move into the Trash) the originals from the Library folder.
g) Restart your Mac. When you have started up again, Empty the Trash of your Mac.
h) Open Safari. It should act as though it has never been opened before. Test to see if the bad behaviour persists.
I hope one or any of these steps helps Laffy!

@chris Oh sorry, I see what you were asking: My previous post about this issue. I've posted many times, but mostly to my admin
-
@GottaLaff no worries. I hope my other reply helps.
-
@chris No way am I going to get that into the weeds (Last but not least option). I would totally mess it up... But everything else is already set to everything you mentioned.

An addition here for the last "nuclear option” before you restart. You’ll also want to backup and then delete any "Safari" named items in the “Library—>Preferences” folder. They will have names like “com.apple.Safari.plist”
-
@chris Not doing any of that. It's way too complicated. Thank you for all the tips! @lisamelton @Asbestos

Luke, this might be your only hope. :=)
It is a little daunting, but if you follow the steps I'm sure you'll be able to manage. People always underestimate themselves. But I leave it up to you! -
@GottaLaff @lisamelton @Asbestos no worries.
-
@chris Where's the Pop up windows option?
-
@GottaLaff It's under the settings for the website.
Safari Menu —> "Settings for mstdn.ca.. (or other website you currently on)” —> Pop-up Windows (it's in the middle of the box) Tap on the words to its right to change the setting. -
@chris Yeah, I found it. Nothing forced a reload btw.
I just refreshed, maybe that was why nothing was working yet.
-
@GottaLaff that could be. It *must* be reloaded in order to accept the changes. To be double-sure you could make the settings change, close the box, and then quit Safari before going back to the same website. (remember that little settings box is website-specific)
-
@chris I quit and came back on. I'll give it 5 minutes to see if it worked now.
Thanks so much for going to all this trouble!

@chris Nothing worked. I went back to the old settings. @lisamelton @Asbestos
