Got to renew my driving license but because of extra categories listed (is it a legacy thing to be able to drive C1, D1, C1E etc?) it says I can't do it online.
-
@gnaddrig Daft stuff. I never paid much notice to these until now. Last renewal I just popped it in the post with a new photo. State of the post now I was keen to do it online but because it asked me if I had these categories it was then preventing me from doing so. . Anyway Dvla has told me to just click No to having categories so presume they'll finally be removed.

@lionelb I will say that in my youth I did drive a tractor with mowing gangs and a thing called a lawn genie which was so heavy that when the tractor hit a pothole the front wheels lifted off the road momentarily like a tractor wheelie. Scary stuff. I did learn to reverse a tractor and trailer. A completely redundant skill now.
-
I have sat on a tractor hoe, pulling levers to keep them in line.
-
@lionelb We could've been in the Wurzels.
-
@emsquared Funny, why would they ask you whether you had any categories? Over here, they check the central register, and from the date and categories of my licence they deduct what that means in todays categories and that's it. No idea whether I could even waive any of those categories if I wanted to. So yeah, daft stuff.

@gnaddrig I would imagine the answer is probably a front end website designed by the likes of C(r)apita who designs my local council website and still won't let me pay by direct debit for council tax because I must authenticate via the Yoti app which cannot prove i'm who I say i am (ooh i'm going to illegally pay somebody else's council tax. What?) despite providing shed loads of proof. Each company blames the other. Literally a 3 login process that goes nowhere.
-
@emsquared Ok, the usual combination of shoddy design, sloppy implementation and none of the parties involved actually talking to any of the others. Sounds like fun...
-
@gnaddrig Yep. A clusterf*** of outsourced s*** and nobody taking any responsibility. I could be wrong (but I'm not).
-
@emsquared interesting because I noticed when I swapped my U.K. license for a French one that it missed all those other categories out. Never realised they’d be eventually removed at home. My U.K. one dated from 1988.
-
@emsquared when I had to renew I wanted at least one of those categories so I could drive our campervan. Had to get a medical too which was a bit of a box ticking exercise but cost money.
-
@rivets ouch.
