Marcy Wheeler looks at a Washington Post editorial taking Kamala Harris to task for not providing policy proposals — even as the editorial admits that WaPo has not demanded similar proposals from Trump, even as Trump provides none.

@wdlindsy This is how it’s done.
Mud-slinging has been a staple of American politics since its inception. We should never have tolerated the practice in the first place, and it’s well past time to leave it behind. No more “that’s just politics” excuses. Make it stop by refusing to let it have any effect.

@wdlindsy “#NextQuestionPlease “ is the response hack #journalists should expect more often, whenever they’re just shilling for #media #oligarchs instead of reporting the #news. #USpol

@wdlindsy
This reporting doesn't make it to the exalted heights of "soft expectations", it fails to hold Trump to even the most rudimentart of primary school reporting, while subjecting Harris to unheard of scrutiny.Even worse, they put in hours of effort decoding his blather, putting the best face on it, and often inventing out of whole cloth what he should have said rather than the incoherent melange he actually said

You're welcome.
I watched it again when I posted the video and thought about how expansive the whole book banning thing has become since then - beyond the salacious details she uses for shock value. In more subtle ways, they want to do this with US history regarding slavery and the genocide of indigenous people too. -

@wdlindsy @Cdespinosa My term for this is “newsworthy bias". https://jackwellborn.com/2021/07/22/newsworthy-bias/

@CatHerder You're right. They want to wipe the slate screen when it comes to our history, and then to overwrite the clean slate with lies, fabrications, toxic fantasies.

@deriamis There's that, for sure. I'd say the Trump era represents a whole new incarnation of this ugly old tradition, too, and foundational to it is the use of social media and the Internet to spread toxic disinformation and hateful memes.

It bugs me to no end how they can't celebrate the progress we've made toward perfecting the dream that is America. To them, it seems a nightmare. -

@CatHerder Yes — and the nightmare is all about themselves, about the loss of their white Christian hegemony.

I think of them as the little Dutch boy with his finger in the dike.
Anyone can, and everyone should read the 1619 Project. The worst enemy of the transgenerational Confederate mythos is the truth. Those people feel threatened like no generation before this have felt. The internet contains an ocean of truth if that is, in fact, what you seek.
The 1619 Project (Published 2019)
American slavery began 400 years ago this month. This is referred to as the country’s original sin, but it is more than that: It is the country’s true origin.

@CatHerder A very good analogy. Excellent sentences: "Those people feel threatened like no generation before this have felt. The internet contains an ocean of truth if that is, in fact, what you seek." I agree!
