@MatWright unfortunately, a LOT of people think Nuclear power is not only a solution, but the only solution. (not I)

@lightning @edwiebe @dx after seeing my Mother and another elderly friend go through it... the Shingles vaccine should be free. It is currently over $500 (over two doses) The pain, including long term, if-not-permanent pain inflicted by that recurrence of a virus *we already give out free vaccines to kids for* is a form of elder abuse IMO.

@chris BC could have gone geo thermal, massive selling power - but no

@MatWright Come to think of it, I am a little disappointed in the Greens that they didn't at least mention an exploration of geothermal in their platform as a way to transition workers away from the gas industry and preserve and use those same skills. It may not be to the same scale, or who knows... maybe it would be and it would immediately put a pin in the “YOU'RE TAKING AWAY JOBS" pushback.

@chris @MatWright I do think nuclear power ought to make a comeback, but some lessons should be applied, ya know?
Like, for one example, stop building them in earthquake/tsunami zones!
Which of course rules out much of BC.
And since they take many years to come online, you've gotta pair it with a solid short game, too. Like solar, wind, geo, tidal, hydro, and bottling up the hot air emitted by politicians.

@kboyd @MatWright and that last paragraph is the real crux of the matter. Until we can come up with a nuclear technology that can be created at-scale in 1-5 years versus 10-25years (or more), nuclear will not be a viable option for the very immediate need we have to reduce our emissions before 2050.
China has figured this out. We only need to stop being either dumb, proud, or racist, or maybe it's all three… and follow their lead.
"To "firm" or stabilise the supply of power from its renewable energy zones, China is using a mix of pumped hydro and battery storage, similar to Australia.”
Canada's potential for pumped hydro is *astronomical* compared to China. And yet you know how many examples of it we have in this country.... nearly none.
'Winning the race': How China plans to meet its 2030 renewables target by the end of this month
While Australia debates the merits of going nuclear and frustration grows over the slower-than-needed switch to solar and wind power, China's renewables rollout is breaking all the records.

@kboyd @MatWright I just found this report that identifies 8,000 Gigawatts across 1200 locations in Canada for pumped hydro.
Site C is 1.1 Gigawatts.
