Due to an issue with wall plates, I've agreed to re-terminate about 30 Ethernet jacks. Data cable installer has agreed to come back later to test/certify everything.

The phrase "I have an impact punch down tool and know how to use it" seemed to help.
As a matter of pride, I need to make sure I do them all correctly.

@ryanc always remember to "punch down"
when terminating ethernet cables and "punch up" when doing comedy. -

@ryanc but do you wire in A or B?
-
@deviantollam @ryanc If all youre running is gigabit or faster Ethernet, it technically doesn't matter even if you mismatch the ends.

@ryanc @deviantollam @chaz auto-mdix is a delightful technology

@astrid @ryanc @deviantollam Yup, a cable with one A end and one B end is a crossover, and the gigabit specification requires auto-MDIX which automatically crosses over if needed. Since two crossovers cancel out, it doesn't matter if you mismatch standards on the ends.

@deviantollam @chaz @astrid I learned to use T568B but I'll mimic whatever the data cabling guy did. It seems like gigabit has to have auto mdi/mdi-x because it uses all four pairs and only two of them are crossed over in a crossover cable anyway. I wonder if it works if you swap the blue and brown pair?

@ryanc I was under the impression that the general consensus was to use “A” unless you had a specific requirement for “B” compatibility, but I'm not sure where I got that from.

@MrDOS I was taught to use T568B when I took "Cisco Networking Academy" classes.
