@cgervasi I suppose that could be the case. I'd also tend to point to the way right-wing networks have spread massive amounts of disinformation in recent years, especially about immigrants. Those networks have had great success in sowing fears among many people, inflaming hate, dividing people, driving them into the arms of authoritarian strongman figures.

White Southern Democrats, overwhelmingly white evangelicals made a mass exodus from the Democratic party after it supported Civil Rights registration in the 1950s and 1960s. Nixon and Reagan actively welcomed those voters and shamelessly used racist dog whistles. Now those voters have the upper hand in the Republican party and are driving it nationally, and the consequences are serious for the whole nation.
