Prison advocates: If you've attempted suicide recently, you have to go to psychiatric jail because you're at high risk of doing it again. The best predictor of future action is past action.
Me: Even if I was at high risk of attempting suicide (which I'm not), why would that justify incarceration?
Prison advocates: Oh, because everyone who attempts suicide immediately regrets it and never attempts it again! By incarcerating you for being at risk of suicide, we're protecting you from making a decision you'll regret!
Me: Now's when I would facepalm but you'd probably say that was "self-harm."

@183231bcb It's so stupid too because if you display self injurous behaviour that isn't seen as "truely" a suicide attempt and are brought into the hospital in distress, my experience is that they will treat you badly while also missing anything else that may be wrong that may have driven you to such behaviour in the first place.
And I'm not saying hospitalization is always the answer in that case either, certainly not incarceration in the hospital, but yeah my experiences are that it's actually quite difficult to get treated by the hospital if you are willing to be there and asking for their help. They certainly don't link you with outside-the-hospital services that could help you *if you aren't already in the hospital*.
But if you've just attempted suicide or they believe you to be at risk for doing so without intervention they will incarcerate you in the hospital whether you want to be there or not. And you can be treated quite badly.
