Comparing it to #OpenSource Software, the head of the #OSI says:
"#AI needs similar freedom to flourish."
Except that the Free Software & Open Source movements were (until recently!) not about the freedom of technology or its makers. It was all about the needs & liberation of those using that technology.
Now the very group self-charged with protecting OSS weaken it.
IMHO the disappointing #OSAID catastrophe is a great example of what happens when you de-center everyday people from strategy.

@downey I do love FOSS most for its benefits to and liberation of users, from a utilitarian point of view (users are the greatest group of interest) as well as the fact that the very point of software is to be a tool to assist users.
I've seen many references to the controversy of the OSAID, but still don't understand the full picture. Please could you let me know what the main problems are - are they the lack of users in stakeholder advisors, or the lack of direct requirements to data access?

@WebCoder49 Here's a good overview:
The Narrows Bridge: From Open Source to AI
In November of 1938, construction began on the Tacoma Narrows bridge in Washington state. Twenty months later in July of 1940, it opened to traffic. Connecting the Tacoma and the Kitsap Peninsula west of Seattle, it was at the time the third longest suspension bridge in the world. From the first day of construction it

@downey Thank you so much for this!
By the way (sorry for the sudden change in subject, but I'll take the chance to ask you as the admin), is a.gup.pe intentionally blocked from floss.social? I cannot access anything from Guppe groups on floss.social.

Many criticisms about the Open Source Initiative's Open Source AI Definition have reached my feeds at FLOSS.social. I was confused.
For those like me unsure of the basis of these criticisms, I'd recommend this article (thanks @downey ). It argues that trying to apply the source-code based idea of "open source" to the distinct concept of a machine learning model may be impossible or weaken the definition of "open source", giving more room for its already-existent misuse. https://redmonk.com/sogrady/2024/10/22/from-open-source-to-ai/
