@oracle "traditional" instant messengers had such a vibe and it's kinda sad that with smartphones you can't really capture it any more

Erin 💽✨replied to digital star system 💾⭐ last edited by@oracle Dino certainly gets the closest to the feel of it of any recent IM software I've used, yeah
Though I don't think it's really replicable, in the same way that e.g. WoW Classic servers are a very different experience from WoW on release -
digital star system 💾⭐replied to Erin 💽✨ last edited by@erincandescent oh yeah for sure. I think in general it’s really depressing and sad how much of old culture we’ve lost
You can revive old hardware, use legacy software, all that sort of thing, but you can’t get the old internet back. We can’t ever undo what we’ve done, and that makes us sad
Technology has come a long way but it also makes us miss what we lost that we can’t get back -

@oracle such is life, i guess. some things get better, things get worse; often these things are decoupled, where things improving in one axis cause other things to degrade.
i may be nostalgic about getting home form school, firing up my computer and chatting to my friends on instant messenger, but I don’t think I’d give up the smartphone for it; and i also can’t really separate the warm glow i feel from that era from the simple joy of being a child and experiencing so much stuff new for the first time.
