@fujiwara it always annoys me when like the pro gamer strategy for a game is to just ignore the gameplay
-
@waitworry @fujiwara it depends. If you're still exploring the area killing the enemies gives you souls, they often guard items, and like you said it's literally part of the game you're playing.
If you've died to a boss a dozen times though, dodging past the enemies to get to the runback quicker can be less frustrating. -
@waitworry @drheyzeus I wasn’t really talking about getting back to the boss, my friend was watching me play Bloodborne yesterday and he kept nagging me to stop fighting enemies in the Forbidden Woods over and over. I just stopped playing because it was so frustrating trying to play with him going “just run… just run…” as if I only care about fighting bosses.

@waitworry @fujiwara Though tbh, the game shouldn't have been designed such that the gameplay could be ignored to begin with.
It's a loss of an opportunity for the player to engage with the game mechanics and level design, and good game design imo should be maximising these opportunities.
"But what if it's somewhere the player has to cross multiple times?"
Then it should have a fast travel or checkpoint on the other side so that such backtracking is not required. Ideally each section of the game should only be used once, and be refined for that one single encounter.

@rgbunny @waitworry To be fair, most of the Souls games will have checkpoints right before major areas, and if they don’t it usually isn’t too hard to get back to where you were. I think that they do it pretty well where you can explore the areas at your own pace because if you run through everything like my friend suggests then you’re missing a lot. But if it run through it then you can’t really get extra stuff.
Minus Dark Souls 1… god the backtracking in that game was rough

@[email protected] I just kinda struggle until the boss is dead, level up with the boss soul, continue

@autumngales I like checking every single section of an area so I usually end up clearing everything out :ChikaDetective2:
