Today we went to check out Shaska, a Peruvian deli near the Outer Mission. They have delicious Peruvian tamal with pork belly, and they also have very good juice. Daily lunch plates.
The tamal was one of my fave ones (and I eat many tamales!)
Very different from Mexican styles. They have another kitchen around the corner with the same name, but this one has more eat-in space.

And on the next block there’s a Peruvian grocery store I like (Casa Guadalupe). Lots of stuff you can’t get at a typical grocer in this neighborhood
-
@skinnylatte casa Guadalupe has frozen huacatay which is key to my homemade hot sauce.

@skinnylatte didja see that grocery benchmark in the chron? Raises questions how a small operation does so well. https://www.sfchronicle.com/projects/2024/sf-grocery-stores-price-comparison/

@skinnylatte Food pic, Peruvian tamales
Saw this in my timeline, misread “tamales” as “females” and thought, goodness gracious, what does Adrianna have lurking behind that content warning? -
@fdr yeah but I think the chron’s basket of goods is like ’regular stuff’ which isn’t this place’s specialty. This place also has delicious empanada and tamales at the counter and lots of stuff you can’t get elsewhere

@Rachel_Thorn oooh

@edinel nice!

@skinnylatte true, but they scored well even for regular stuff, which I think made it an interesting outlier… both in chron’s selection to survey, and contrary to a conceit that returns to scale are large at the higher end of the spectrum. The asterisk is, I wonder if the employees are getting the squeeze.

@fdr I read something about other ethnic grocers having better prices and margins because the bulk of their produce comes from different sources. From smaller producers and suppliers
