Well… one reason that software requires maintenance is that we aren't allowed to keep the context that it runs in stable. If we don't have to update OS's or standards or whatever other vectors for instability, software *doesn't* require maintenance.
Old game cartridges are a good example. yes, batteries and other *physical* aspects wear out but an old NES could run fine today if it was kept in nice condition.
