Meta seems cooked, but I’m glad we have open and federated alternatives!

@dansup you should do a upgraded hubzilla UI, so it looks modern like pixelfed

@dansup please don't promote Signal here. It's centralized and not really open source. Matrix is what you are looking for.

@cos @dansup it's not federated but signal is far, far better at encryption than matrix (which has laughable problems) and the important part for any encrypted app is it's easy for non techies to set up and find users.
If your threat model is the US govt and you KNOW you're a target, like a journalist, then signal. There's no contest.
If your threat model is "holy water and self hosting" then matrix will halfway work but can be attacked seven ways to Sunday (similar to how stupidly bad telegram's E2EE is)
You can run your own signal universe, it just won't federate with the people sensible enough to know they should let the organization with the PAID LAWYERS WHO DENY CLAIMS manage the hosting, unlike whatever shady VPS you end up getting
https://github.com/signalapp/Signal-Server
https://github.com/jtof-dev/Signal-ServerWhereas using the maintained version is easy to set up for relatives and protects journalists and sources (just like using Tor for everyday things)

@dansup I dunno about equating Instagram with Pixelfed. There's lots of ordinary folks on Instagram, everything from disability rights advocates to a woman who performs classic works on the piano with a rooster on her head. But Pixelfed seemed very hard core photography; I found it very intimidating.

@risottobias @cos @dansup @cos @dansup yeah, I mean I really like matrix, and I selfhost a martix server, but IMHO Signal is a way better & more realistic WhatsApp replacement option as a for the vast majority of people.

@dansup OneDrive/Teams/Sharepoint -> #Nextcloud

@dansup The one thing keeping on facebook is local community groups. My profile is basically a burner account with not much personal info, but I love my local Buy Nothing group.

@dansup so these services have robust moderation and fact checking? Who fact checks the fact checkers to ensure they’re being truthful and unbiased?
-
@dansup Also would like to recommend Lemmy as an alternative to Reddit

@dansup How does one rearrange post order in a collection?
-
-
@dansup id add Lemmy for groups/forum functionality. Its a massive part of why people still use Facebook.

@dansup
Alternatives to Telegram? Matrix seems to lack some of Telegram's features.

@dansup unfortunately, I don't know if they're "cooked". They're just taking fewer directions from feds. I'd still recommend getting off of big tech platforms of course. My only criticism is do we really gotta replace reels?

@dansup I'm saying we should ditch doomscrolling altogether haha. I totally agree we should ditch reels!

@dansup Really would like to replace Insta with pixelfed, but there's no app, and even after signing up, no logon, so can't.
