Yes, this move should have had more thought from Apple before executing the idea but I also think folks probably overreacted. It took far less energy to go to your library and simply delete it than the rage that followed.

We like to think of our computers and especially our pocket-devices as very personal. That they just shoved stuff onto it without consent was seen as a gross personal violation. Emailing everyone (a commonly understood gateway for comms) and giving folks a free promo code would have been the right choice.
