Don't worry, there's nothing to be alarmed about. Next month the UN is holding another major climate conference, and this time they're gonna solve all our problems.
Or maybe not...
_____________________________________Azerbaijan, the host of the Cop29 global climate summit, will see a large expansion of fossil gas production in the next decade, a new report has revealed. The authors said the crucial negotiations should not be overseen by “those with a vested interest in keeping the world hooked on fossil fuels.”
The Cop29 summit, starting on 11 November, comes as scientists say continued record carbon dioxide emissions means “the future of humanity hangs in the balance.” The International Energy Agency said in 2021 that no new fossil fuel exploitation should take place if CO2 emissions were to fall to zero by 2050.
Azerbaijan’s president, Ilham Aliyev, told a climate conference in April: “Having oil and gas deposits is not our fault. It’s a gift from God.”

Maybe instead of having COPs in seemingly random, mostly petrostates, they should have it in whichever city was most devastated by a #climatedisaster in the last year. There would be a few to choose from next year.Currently I think Valencia is "winning" for next year's summit.

@chris @breadandcircuses It is of course planned many years in advance, which allows them time to clean up and prepare.

@chris @breadandcircuses @matthewtoad43 Though I think some smaller states probably have a better claim having had a series of hurricanes and similar devastating extreme events, but they didn't get the television treatment that a Western European state gets..
Sudan might give COP a taste of what resource war looks like too, or Gaza, if they want to see what land theft looks like! -

@epistatacadam @breadandcircuses @matthewtoad43 or Syria, with a long civil war started in part by climate induced drought and food system collapse.

@chris
> instead of having COPs in seemingly random, mostly petrostates, they should have it in whichever city was most devastated by a climate disaster in the last yearThe World Social Forum was set up to counter the World Economic Forum. It's usually hosted in a city the Global South.
Maybe a Conference of the Peoples could be held in climate-damaged cities? As as a focus for an emergency relief effort, bringing needed expertise and aid into the city.

@strypey @chris @breadandcircuses @matthewtoad43 They can start in Valencia right away. And while they're there, they can immediately start by helping out the cititzens clean up the mud and rubble from the floods. Actions speak louder than words, particularly in a COP context.

@chris @breadandcircuses @matthewtoad43 great idea, and if there are insufficient facilities the delegates should have to stay in tents, and take ground transportation from the nearest airport like ordinary people.
