Ok, so this might sound crazy, but why does anyone actually *need* to follow Threads from a mastodon instance. Like, if you have an instagram or facebook account, you can already follow any Threads account without putting the moderation load on your ma...

> Why are our government officials being gate-kept by billionaire owned gated socials?
Because that's where the audience is. It's like asking why politicians aren't giving interviews to your 6 reader blog - the newspapers have a bigger audience.
And, yes, professional social networks have large teams of PR & recruitment specialists. See https://shkspr.mobi/blog/2024/08/the-limits-of-organic-growth-for-startups/

@Edent @xgebi Oh com on! It's $6 a moth to have a fully managed hosting on masto.hosting. That's the easiest, low risk, exploratory account on mastodon.
Yes, there are other issues involved. But seriously, there should be a lot more experimental gov and biz official accounts on mastodon by this point in time....what 2 YEARS after that guy took over twitter?!

You have literally *zero* idea how procurement works in a large and/or sensitive environment.
Does that $6/mo meet the cybersecurity needs of a Government department? What's the cost of integrating it with the current comms software? What are the risks associated with being on a shared platform? What does support cost - both internal and external? Does it integrate easily into FOI machinery?
FB & Twitter built expansive infrastructure for Governments. Masto hasn't.

@kristinHenry @xgebi
What's the cost / benefit ratio? To an approximation, 0% of people are on Mastodon. Their message reaches more people on other social networks.
They have a website. If you want the information, go visit.

@Edent @xgebi Ummmm... exactly, how do you know what I do or do not know.
My calls for public officials to set up instances and accounts are fully informed of what is involved.
What I don't know is how public officials think it's just fine to only post emergencies on a site controlled by a guy who decided that Ukraine shouldn't have access to his US Government (ie, my tax dollars) funded satellite system that...umm...enough in one post.

@kristinHenry Because I have extensive experience - and no one with any experience would suggest "just spend $6 on this" as a viable solution.
> What I don't know is how public officials think it's just fine to only post emergencies on a site
Because that's where the audience is.
And because those sites spend *millions* on getting large customers like Governments. It's that simple. The Fediverse (which I love) has neither the audience size nor the commercial infrastructure.

@kristinHenry I'm someone who spent a couple of years trying to get .gov.uk onto things like the Fediverse. Feel free to check my LinkedIn.
To be clear, I *want* official agencies on here. But people have to understand *why* those agencies went with Twitter / Facebook.
Those companies have commercial products which integrate into existing workflows. They have legal compliance. They have FOI compatible services.
Fediverse doesn't.
It can't compete at that level until it does.

@Edent Ahhhh, You're in the UK!
That explains a lot.
Here in the US, we have some rather urgent issues coming up.
And, since we have a lot more people and climates, maybe we could benefit more from seeing our official agencies on mastodon.

@kristinHenry I agree! You should have your agencies publishing data in the open.
