Hot take: the general societal fear of dentists has little to do with pain and everything to do with consent.
People experience things more painful than dentistry regularly. A lot of people do it on purpose at the gym. Many people lube with it daily as a product of being exploited at work.
It's the bit where a stranger has their hand in your body and the stranger is making decisions. That's the only bit that sets dentistry aside from ordinary day to day pain.

@coolandnormal I’d add though that pain in the mouth and teeth (and face generally) is fundamentally different to other kinds of pain. There’s something basic about pain that stops you eating and talking and interacting with the world.
