Games featuring paid loot boxes will soon receive a mandatory 'M' rating in Australia
The Australian Government doesn't want titles featuring "in-game purchases with an element of chance" being recommended to children under 15 years of age.

@MOOMANiBE I'm baffled that paying real money to gamble somehow warrants a lower age rating than simulating something that resembles a casino, but at the same time very happy it warrants anything at all for once

@JosJuice @MOOMANiBE if you really want to get enraged Eurogamer posted an interview with some PEGI folks a while back. Their excuses for rating Balatro 18+ while more or less ignoring lootboxes and similar actual gambling mechanics are... poorly thought out to say the least.

@JosJuice @beeoproblem @MOOMANiBE oof.
honestly their rationale for rating it 18 is… fine to me. 18 shouldn’t be a death sentance for a game (though I think something lower would probably be appropriate here)
but on the other hand, real money gambling mechanics (incl. gatcha) should absolutely be a criterion which immediately bumps a game to 18+. and if the concern is that there will be confusion as a result of this… then it’s time to introduce e.g. an “18G - Real Money Gambling” rating or similar

@erincandescent @beeoproblem @MOOMANiBE One thing I really do like about PEGI is that 18+ isn't a death sentence like it is for e.g. ESRB's "Adults Only", and that they will rate very violent games 18+

@JosJuice @beeoproblem @MOOMANiBE it feels very similar with films over here as well. A BBFC or USK 18.. actually fairly common. In a way that MPAA NC-17 isn’t and is basically a rating death sentance reserved for porn.
