when I look at mastodon, no matter how much I tune the filter, 20-40% of the feed is tech posts I don’t understand

I’m really curious about this because I heard @inquiline mention it too and… I’m not seeing it in my feed, even though I work in tech. I just scrolled through 100 posts and only found one that was a little bit techy. I saw one earlier today. I do follow a lot of folks that *work* in tech, but they’re mostly posting cats or flowers or hiking pictures or kvetching about politics.

@seachanger I really *want* to follow more cool people on here but 7/8 of the bios are like “I’m a game dev and stack admin, I love coding in fleeble and bleegox, especially the spoon fork, and I am going to post lots of pics of badly drawn digital characters”.

I’m not saying you are wrong! We all have our own windows on the fediverse. I’m just trying to think about why your mutuals are more inclined to toot about tech than mine when you clearly didn’t try to make that happen and I’m conversely more interested in the topic!
-
@Moss @seachanger Same. Even worse, some of those people are actually both nice and interesting on other wavelengths; and some are jerks and/or really narrow in focus; and from bios I cannot tell who is who
-
@inquiline @seachanger Exactly!

@impermanen_ @seachanger @inquiline
Mirrors my experience. Sure, there's tech in my feed but that's maybe less than 25%. And I'm a colossal computer nerd.
Mastodon/Fedi is a 100% curated experience, free from algorithm, so it really comes down to whomst you choose to follow.
Having said that, I do believe things veer techish here because it's a relatively new platform, similar to the way twitter was VERY tech-oriented in its early days. It took awhile for 'normal' people to discover twitter.

Many replies saying “I am a tech person and don’t seem to have this problem” and then offering me advice on how to use Mastodon
These are not compelling

@seachanger Hmm, I wonder what drove so many non-techies away?
-
@ralfmaximus @impermanen_ @seachanger It's not just because it's relatively new; it specifically and for specific reasons attracts FLOSS types, who are also a specific band within "tech"
It currently looks as though more mainstream adoption is relatively off the table, but things are obviously in flux...

@inquiline @ralfmaximus @impermanen_ @seachanger the term F(L)/OSS is hotly debated and i think it obscures more than it enlightens since most programmers contribute to or use "open source" software at this point. it used to be a much more radical banner but it is largely misused as stolen valor to advance flatly libertarian objectives at this point. free software used to mean categorical divestment from corporate tech stacks but it has been almost completely diverted into "open source" to serve corporate objectives, while the remaining free software advocates are widely derided for making their code "inaccessible" via license restrictions. the result is a lot of libertarian posturing which still just serves the purposes of capital

@inquiline @ralfmaximus @impermanen_ @seachanger i think we can do better but i've been extremely surprised to find that most techies on here are actively not interested in building local power. the non-tech people on here have been much more receptive. this is to your point that self-proclaimed FLOSS forms a highly insular group https://circumstances.run/@hipsterelectron/112537399927201661

@seachanger oh gee i sure wish we could have multiple streams we could post to without having to make multiple accounts
-
@Moss @inquiline @seachanger I have say that as a person who works in computers, I feel much the same way except I know what all those things listed in their bios are (and sometimes wish I didn’t)
I’ll see if I can do better at cwing my work posts.

@nein09 @Moss @inquiline you know tagging them with a unique term would be more functional, because then we could just filter them. Idk if cw is really helpful?

@trwnh @seachanger we can have whatever we want. We just have to build it.
