'A Jack of all trades, but a master of none'
Everyone's probably heard that saying.
It's not the whole saying... there's another line.
'But better than a master of one'
Those old sayings you've heard have been twisted to mean the opposite, either by religions or capitalism.
'Blood is thicker than water'
Nope
'The blood of the covenant is thicker than the water of the womb'
Which means that the family you choose, is better than the one forced upon you by birth.
There are loads more.

much though I agree with the sentiment, I don't think that's historical. I can find many documents with the "master of none" phrasing in the 18th century, and the original model in Latin, Johannes Factotum (John Do-All), used since the 17th and disparagingly. the formulation with "better than a master of one" I can only find in recent sources.
anyway fuck all these dead men, we don't need validation from them. but if you want to be vindicated by history for a laugh, I would point to the fact that the first record of Johannes Factotum in English was this 1592 equivalent of a subtweet:¹
> Yes, truſt them not: for there is an upſtart Crow, beautified with our feathers, that with his 'Tygre's heart, wrapt in a Players hyde', ſuppoſes hee is as well able to bombaſt out a Blanke-verſe, as the beſt of you : and beeing an abſolute 'Iohannes fac totum', is in his owne conceyt the onely Shake-ſcene in a Countrey.
I.e. a caustic burn on this pretentious actor who thought he could dabble in writing too, one (checks notes) William Shakespeare.
