For the record, Mastodon will not allow something to go "viral" and show up under "Trends" or Explore if there's a CW on the post.

Glitch and some forks do, but not vanilla Mastodon.

Not that this is any excuse for not using a CW, but the software annoyingly works against best practice here.

But you're right, best to always err on the side of caution. I've definitely seen CW-ed post get traction on here, so the real impact might not be as big, at least for the really important stuff.
