I just posted this valuable statement by Noah Berlatsky on Facebook, and Facebook immediately took down the posting

I have friends and family who I will be more likely to avoid because of the stink and stench they smeared upon themselves by cozying up to to iMAGA.
-
@wdlindsy good piece until the very end, where he complains about people dropping substack subscriptions. He should consider migrating off substack
That's of course not on you. Thanks for sharing, it's accurate and cogently phrased.
-
@draNgNon I'm glad you found it helpful. I agree that we need to consider the venues in which people choose to publish. At the same time, if I adopted a totally purist and rigid attitude, refusing to read or share material from sites that are far from perfect, I suspect I'd have little to share here.

@wdlindsy
Those who could be endangered by MAGA relatives need to protect themselves.But for those not in danger, a purely performative act of distancing from family over disgust for their politics (such that they may never hear anything outside their bubble) is unhelpful to people at risk.

@Savvyhomestead Same for me. I'm already alienated from family members and friends on social media after their votes in 2016. They have shown me the face under the mask and I will not unsee it.

@PapyrusBrigade As Noah Berlatsky wisely says, "Different people are in different circumstances; you can’t make blanket rules."

Yes, Facebook took the posting down as soon as I posted it. And see this report from another reader of this thread who had the same experience when that reader posted this material on Facebook:

"Just so we’re clear — the rule is that these people are allowed to despise us; to insult large groups of people on the regular; to demand that transgender people be pushed out of public society for their own comfort; to talk gleefully about how they can’t want to watch ICE agents pull grandmothers from their beds and deport them;"

"to — again, because this deserves repeating — shout
'YOUR BODY, OUR CHOICE!' at women and girls'; to call Puerto Rico a pile of garbage; to denigrate women who don’t have children; to repeatedly claim that 'liberalism is a mental disorder'; to talk about how they voted for Trump to punish us; to regularly claim that Black people are lying about the existence of racism and police brutality, to force their religion on us, and so forth!" -

@wdlindsy Good morning, William.
Talking of women/bodies, etc., have you seen this?
After Trump’s election, women are swearing off sex with men. This has been a long time coming | Cécile Simmons
When misogyny reigns supreme, a sex strike can be a feminist act, says Cécile Simmons, an investigative researcher at the Institute for Strategic Dialogue

@wdlindsy Not me.

It’s the same arrogance that infected Nazi Germany, rooted in so called racial supremacy that led to scenes like this before it got a lot worse. Behind the uniforms civilians look on, smiles on their faces. These were probably their neighbours, or shopkeepers they knew.
The infection of fascism is a curse upon the world.

@wdlindsy Oh look! It was immediately removed

@wdlindsy The problem is and has been they bring up politics within the first 5 minutes of conversation they have nothing else to talk about. This was taboo only 10 years ago but now thanks to them everything is on the table. And then I start challenging them and they get triggered. There's just no reason to do it you already know what the bourgeoise sheep are going to say and do I"m just not that in to conspiracy theories.
-
@wdlindsy They make up for their lack of understanding of history and intelligent commentary with overwhelming voting numbers in swing states and shouting down equality with white billionaire money. It's always either a demagogue, a conspiracy theory, or some kind of nostalgia about how they are being oppressed. Boring.
