we say this, while being fully confident that companies will keep doing that exact thing. nobody designs actually interesting file formats anymore, except in highly specialized situations. like, we're not saying that people are wrong to use the widely-available tooling, or anything like that, just noting that it's a different era.

a few months ago we and a friend dug into a little clipboard-based save-game format which, according to its author, was "encrypted"
it was JSON that had been run through zstd with a custom dictionary, then converted to the braille codepoints (there's exactly 256 of them)
