@polotek At first blush, I'd agree. However, what OnlyFans did was effectively connect fans with creators. That level of access and intimacy (ugh, maybe bad choice of word?) might turn out to be interesting for YouTube. If so, I'd expect it might lead to restricting those micro-communities to paid subscribers?

@earth2marsh I think this makes perfect sense for Youtube. I just think it's also gonna be a shitshow. I've tried to join lots of creator communities and it's just not a place I want to be. Chronically online stans are the worst. And I think these communities are limited by that. There is a wider circle of people who don't join because it sucks.

@polotek @TechCrunch Iβm curious how the slight barrier of having to join a creatorβs discord results in higher signal vs. frictionless commentary from YT randos. IOW In what world are YT comments a community lol

@turbodog @TechCrunch YouTube comments are just like any public forum. There are lots of randos. But a lot of posts are regulars. Keep in mind that YouTube and a bunch of other platforms don't show you all the comments. It's algorithmic. So skimming through them doesn't give the average person the right idea about what it looks like to the creator.
