"After the June debate that so clearly exposed Joe Biden’s cognitive decline, news coverage questioning his competence to hold office for another term was seemingly never-ending, and for good reason.

@Judeet99 I don't disagree that medical issues are at the root of cognitive decline — in most cases. My mother suffered from progressive dementia in her final years and I know the syndrome. My point is that I see no reason to demand that a clinical practitioner warning the public that a person running for high office is suffering from evident cognitive decline do clinical tests to prove that point.

@wesdym Yes, I certainly agree that Trump is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to analyzing the problem facing us, when over 40% of Americans lean strongly authoritarian.

@wdlindsy Ask why a lot of media is not all over Trump’s separation with reality, and the answer is terrible. These entities are complicit with the undermining of America. Question 2: Why? Why was Biden assaulted and Trump gets a relative free ride? Profits, and a political agenda, that’s something other than in our best interests.

@janeadams Thanks for that information. The word "diagnose" seems to be doing some heavy lifting in that APA ruling — and, of course, as we learned from the APA's years on end of classifying homosexuality as a mental illness and the politics that had to be faced in shifting that shameful conclusion, the APA is capable of being very wrong.

@capnthommo I agree — a good point.

@Huntn00 I very much agree. And I can't get those people at the Economic Club in New York to whom Trump babbled incoherently applauding him wildly. Lawrence O'Donnell was correct to say they were some of the stupidest rich people in New York — though many of them have degrees from the best universities.

@wdlindsy Simply because a person's private health is not public property. I'm sure there are mechanisms in place, or at least one would hope so, to prevent anyone so obviously unwell from gaining a position of power.

@wdlindsy Wealth tends to be corrupting for perceived self benefit. Although I’m financially comfortable, not wealthy, that’s why I have an issue with wealth and how it twists society around its little finger in destructive ways. It’s a ME>WE issue.

I don't see that happening.
(& I also was horrified at the huge number of journalists, pundits, news people, media wonks... who attacked Biden, called him senile & demented - and never amended their attacks once it was clear that at least part of his problem had been how sick he was.) They aren't willing to be honest about TFG because they're afraid he will attack them, damage their income. -

@lolonurse When you say you don't see that happening, you mean you can't see the media giving up the sanewashing and directly addressing his cognitive decline, right? I fear you may be right, though there are some glimmers now, after the debate, of the media's willing to reassess their stubborn commitment to both-sidesism and giving Trump pass after pass

@Judeet99 Public figures are public figures. To point to very obvious mental aberrations in someone running for high office is not to invade her/his privacy. It's to do due diligence as a practitioner precisely because that person has a large public presence that promises to affect large numbers of people.

@lolonurse @Huntn00 Oh, yes. Spend just a day in academic life and you'll encounter a world of folks like that.

@wdlindsy "Due diligence" could only be effectively done with a proper face to face assessment in the privacy of a psychiatrist's office in order to get the full picture. Anyone can make comments based solely on someone's public performance, be they psychiatrist or not.

Some of them are probably a touch embarrassed at being so transparent in their pandering, so are weaving in tiny bits of "truth" to appease some of their audience. But I don't think they'll go all the way. I believe they're greedy & scared.
