"After the June debate that so clearly exposed Joe Biden’s cognitive decline, news coverage questioning his competence to hold office for another term was seemingly never-ending, and for good reason.

"So naturally, after Trump‘s frantic debate meltdown that even Fox 'News' said Kamala dominated, I expected to see the same headlines calling for Donald to leave the race. Or at least have him committed somewhere.
But they must not have watched the debate."

"What’s very clearly emerged from recent weeks of campaign trail coverage is a rather glaring disparity. On one hand, we have an eminently defensible drive to get Harris to pony up more details of what she wants to do as president, and real scrutiny being paid to how much her policy preferences have shifted in the past five years."

"Psychiatrist Richard A. Friedman wrote in The Atlantic today that Trump is showing signs of cognitive decline. His tangents and inability to get to a point suggest 'a fundamental problem with an underlying cognitive process.'”

“'If a patient presented to me with the verbal incoherence, tangential thinking, and repetitive speech that Trump now regularly demonstrates, I would almost certainly refer them for a rigorous neuropsychiatric evaluation to rule out a cognitive illness,' he wrote."

@wdlindsy Any psychiatrist worth their salt would request a range of other tests first to eliminate possible causes, like for a chronic urine infection, anaemia etc. Once all those come back clear then yes, psych evaluation could be done.

@Judeet99 So a trained and competent psychiatrist who sees clear signs of mental decline in a person running for the highest office of the land should refrain from ringing a warning bell about that?
In what sane and responsible universe?

"Trump is rewarded for being a fascist… The glee with which they went after Joe Biden suggests that journalists are aware of their irrelevancy in the Trump era; they were eager to hold someone, anyone, accountable, and Joe Biden’s bad debate performance was right there. But the media is unable to consistently, day after day, inform readers that Trump is dangerous and evil and unfit."

@wdlindsy yes. If it were ones grandfather one would be urging them to see a doctor, or better still a specialist. One would be doing it out of care and concern for one's relative. It would simply be doing the right thing by them. The fact that they aren't demonstrates their callousness and lack of concern.

@wdlindsy Lol this article caused me to revisit a particular Wikipedia page, only to see that it has a new section since I had last read it in undergrad 🤭 https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Goldwater_rule

"Will the fact that Trump is mentally disordered, habitually dishonest, increasingly erratic remain thematically central to election coverage, or will this all prove to be a passing concession?
We can’t be more than cautiously optimistic."

"The preponderance of media criticism in the Trump era has served to underscore how resistant legacy journalists are to introspection, how impervious to change or accountability. …
Mainstream press coverage in 2016 sought generally to normalize Trump and abnormalize Hillary Clinton, so that campaign coverage didn’t have to be dominated by his many aberrances."

" In 2024, sanewashing has been elemental to the creation of this same false balance—first between Trump and Biden, now between Trump and Harris. It has propagated without regard to whether it leaves consumers better informed, or endangers democracy.
At least until this week."

@wdlindsy While Trump's cognition is a real issue, the much deeper issue is all the pestilence he would carry into office with him. We got here because Nixon did that, and Nixon wasn't cognitively impaired. We're electing an entire executive government. Trump is just an old, stupid, confused, angry bigot. By himself, he's little danger. But the army of frankly evil people he'd bring in with him are extremely dangerous. THAT'S the main reason to reject him.

@wdlindsy When you've worked in the psych and gen medicine field for the elderly you KNOW that there may be medical issues that give rise to certain behaviours, and you ALWAYS test for those first to eliminate possible reasons before jumping in with an instant diagnosis of a psychiatric condition. I worked in that field, so I know.

@wdlindsy During the debate with Trump and Biden, I saw no signs of cognitive decline on the part of Biden. Trump was the one presenting bizarre fantasies while Biden actually spoke quite to the point. The only weakness in Biden's speech was his manner of delivery because of his fighting the stammer and the cold he had. and I have seen no sign of cognitive decline since. His press conference later answering live questions was absolutely brilliant. Harris is just the stronger candidate.

"The public relies on the press to provide an accurate portrayal of political figures, and when major outlets sanitize Trump’s rhetoric, they create a distorted reality. ...
"Sanewashing is not an isolated problem; it’s a systemic issue within political journalism. By prioritizing access and avoiding accusations of bias, the media often fails to convey the full gravity of Trump’s actions."

As Alex Henderson reports, CNN has aired a supercut video contrasting Trump's performance in the 2016 presidential debate to his performance on 10 September 2024 debate. Hafiz Rashid describes the latter performance compared with the former one as a "stark example of the convicted felon’s cognitive decline."

@wpeckham Yes, I agree. I never bought the spin of corporate media that Biden's performance betokened cognitive decline. I saw a tired elderly man who had just traveled through multiple time zones and was suffering from a respiratory illness, not knowing how to respond to a raving lunatic.
