As an example, the popular mastodon hosting service that hosts SocialBC does not allow custom configuration of the mastodon code. So the character limit is not able to be changed for anyone using the service.
Mastodon has already effectively chosen to make it *possible* to change the character limit. What I ask for your support here is for that choice to be extended to any owner of a mastodon instance.
