I think people should talk about self hosting more in the context of reusing old computers. Say you upgrade your gaming rig, it was previously ddr3 and now you have a motherboard, cpu and a psu laying around. You don’t need the shiniest rack servers to self host. Using old computers to host a couple game servers, or something like https://www.firefly-iii.org/ is fairly trivial. I don’t personally use truenas scale but I admire it for giving people a web ui to do stuff with ZFS and the fact you can install containerized applications. Your zpool doesn’t have to be massive, you can pick up a couple of drives (2, 4, 6) and make a small pool. Backups don’t have to be this huge thing either.

I’m a big fan of reducing e waste by finding new uses for things. Hell, wanna know something funny? Back in the day my chromebook had a broken screen. I installed a Linux distro on it and I used it to run my discord bots. You can turn an old laptop into a small machine hosting basic stuff. Doesn’t need to be a desktop.

@puppygirlhornypost2 reusing old hardware is my fuckin jam! You don't realize how many local services you can run on an old POS until you pack it full of containers

@puppygirlhornypost2 yeah its a great use of old tech! I plan to use my old computer parts to make a little game and media streaming device for my TV.
