@emsquared think it said over 7 years so a good stint at it
-
@bobthomson70 In many ways it's playing along with where we are with music now and the platforms that deliver it. People will always look for shortcuts and ways to bend the rules and technology enables that. It's wrong but this guy was just grabbing the means of production and exploiting the lack of quality control.
-
@bobthomson70 I mean do the streaming companies not look for suspicious repeat streaming from the same IP address? Maybe he was way cleverer and spoofed even that?
-
@emsquared I don’t imagine they bother much but maybe this case will focus their minds
-
@emsquared would be easy enough with VPN services / cloud based infra to change IPs a lot tbh It’d need to be IDS style smarts I think in order to easily detect it.
-
@bobthomson70 Oh yeah entirely posible but never underestimate how dumb the corporate streaming services are. It might well have been an unlocked door and this guy was wandering around and found all he had to do was push it open and those checks and balances just weren't in play at the streamers side of things.
-
@emsquared it will be interesting to see if the fraud charges work out as it’s hard to equate it to a non tech fraud for me, so maybe not easy to win for the streamers.
-
@bobthomson70 I'm no lawyer but he merely gamed the system. I mean you can say the music wasn't real (good luck with that in the present world of music). He streamed the creations he trained the AI to make. Hell the pluggers decades back used to game the system, bribe DJ's with free product, buy albums from chart shops etc.
Maybe there is a law this breaks. Like you say it'll be interesting to see the fallout from this. Like when Stock Aitken & Waterman changed the laws on sampling. -
@emsquared yeah it’s hard to see anything legally wrong. More a spirit vs letter of the law situation.
-
@bobthomson70 I mean look at this thing and what it can create. Yes just basic morality says streaming revenue should be from real people but detecting AI music is going to be a toughie in future.

@emsquared will only get more impressive with time too no doubt eh

@bobthomson70 Gave it a go for gits and shingles. Wow. Just wow. Got two complete, French speaking songs that I could remix or download the stems (multitracks) from and they were freakishly good. Just from a text prompt.
