I worked in retail when I was younger. Most of humanity is fine, some of it is even outright pleasant. The problem with working retail is that there's no bottom to how low a few people can go.

I worked retail at a discount clothing store and my experience was that the type of customers who needed to save money on clothes were often very stressed out by their financial situation and took it out on the staff (at least that's my most charitable interpretation)
