An important thing to know about the subway cops stopping the crime of fare evasion, is:
1) White New Yorkers evade fares more than anyone else.
2) Cops get fired if they stop white fare evaders vs Black or brown fare evaders.

@[email protected] Two open secrets: 1) There are quotas and retaliation. So cops invent crimes: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=ZVkkhkLSqWE 2) White New Yorkers evade fares more than Black and Hispanic folks. Because cops get in trouble if they give too many tickets and summons to white folk. This officer sued NYPD, and recorded his bosses pressuring him to stop giving summons to white people, and to give more to Black people. 54 stops, 25 women, 2 Black men. Unacceptable numbers! https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=Ki_HVlBhUQY

This is what cops mean when they say that the racism is systemic, that the system was not built by cops but by rich men.

@mekkaokereke systemically, this is the worst way to prevent fare evasion. Berlin and Helsinki have no fare gates. There are ticket checkers who check a subset of riders to verify they have paid, and write tickets to offenders. No fare gates, no turnstile and no guns required.

@jdblair @mekkaokereke though arguably enforcers in Berlin target people whom they think they'll get a payment out of, which often means immigrants and foreigners get targeted most.
