Does anyone know of a modern #Android phone which allows call recording *without* root?
I'm currently on an aging 5T running #LineageOS and can record calls just fine - a button in the dialler lets me record straight from the line. I don't need to put it on speaker and record via the microphone.
(Looking for 1st hand experience, not search results. No need to reply to discuss the legality of call recording. I need root-less for online banking etc.)

As per all your very fine suggestions, I've gone with the Pixel Pro 8.
Cheapest place is Amazon for £800 - which includes free Pixel Buds - https://amzn.to/3TjjscQ
Plan for next week is to install @GrapheneOS on it.
If you have any tips, tricks, hints, or advice - please let me know

Woo! #Pixel8Pro is here.
I've decided to give it a week with Google's default OS before flashing anything fancy.
I set it up without a Google account and it didn't complain. Rummaging around in the settings and most of the defaults are sensible and privacy preserving.
So far, the only slightly annoying things are:
Order of the navigation buttons (but can't be changed on Grapheme either).
Hardcoded launcher info screen - filled with news / YouTube. Can't be removed.
No rear swipe sensor. -
Very strange #PassKey experience just now.
Tried using my NFC ring to sign in to Google on my phone. It wouldn't allow it. Worked fine with my spare Yubikey though.
I tried adding the ring again, and it says it is already set up. No idea what's going on there.
So, always make sure you have registered *multiple* FIDO2 tokens on every device / service.
(Mind you, that's expensive and tedious.) -
The #Pixel8Pro camera app is excellent. So customisable.
The temperature sensor is an absolute joke. I thought it might be FLIR - but it is literally just a single point reading which needs to be 5cm away from a surface. Pointless.
Google software gets increasingly needy once you log in. Basically fine until then.
Google Wallet is still magical. Probably the thing I'll miss the most when I install Grapheme.
-
Hahaha! The #Pixel8Pro has an NFC sensor right in the middle of the back.
Which means it keeps picking up my ring's NDEF message
Wonder if I can switch off NFC but still keep it for payment?
(Nope! NFC off means no payments.) -
The #Pixel8Pro came with the in-ear #PixelBudsPro.
They're quite nifty. I haven't tried out the noise cancellation and transparency mode - but audio quality is great. Spatial audio is a nice gimmick.
Tap and swipe controls are accurate and work on both sides.
But, OMG, Big G is *desperate* for you to use their assistant. I quite like Amazon Echo for home control, but I can't think of a single occasion where I've wanted to speak to my phone.
-
The #Pixel8Pro's camera zoom is ridiculous. I last had optical zoom on a Sharp (!) P902 in 2004.
Here's the view from the cheap seats at the O2 last night.
(Next message shows zoom.)
-
And here it is at maximum zoom.
That's stunningly good!
I'm not clever enough to play with all the pro tools, ISO, exposure, etc. I just had this in point and shoot mode.
I didn't use any of the cloud AI processing either.
-
The #Android webcam feature on the #Pixel8Pro is stunningly good. Wish it were backported to earlier kernels.
I've paid for DroidCam - https://shkspr.mobi/blog/2021/03/droidcam-use-an-old-android-as-your-webcam/ - which is a great way of getting similar functionality on older devices.
-
#GrapheneOS here we go!
Couldn't get the WebUSB to work - so going with the CLI tools. Very well written documentation.
-
Fuck yeah!
-
My #GrapheneOS on #Pixel8Pro going well so far.
Software updated.
Bluetooth paired, headphone controls work.
eSIM installed - but didn't connect. Removed and reinstalled seems to have worked. But had to manually select network.
Regular SIM connected to 5G.
Better try installing my regular apps.Boring work mode stuff can wait until my holiday is over!
-
Good news on the #GrapheneOS front - the new firmware has DisplayPort over USB-C.
I plugged into a hub, my phone detected Ethernet, mouse, keyboard, and the monitor!
Only problem is, I've no idea how to rotate the *external* screen on Android. Any clues?

Bugger. Looks like Starling bank has stopped working with #GrapheneOS
https://github.com/PrivSec-dev/banking-apps-compat-report/issues/39
So I either need to get a new phone which has an unmodified OS, hope that Starling fix it, or move bank.
All within the next 14 days.
NB it is completely legitimate that software makers can decide where their code runs - see https://shkspr.mobi/blog/2023/05/the-limits-of-general-purpose-computation/ - but it annoys me.
(Please don't be a confidently wrong man clogging up my replies.)
-
@Edent Starling still works with my Calyxos and microg on my fairphone 4
-
@JustineSmithies don't update to the latest version of the app.
-
@redauburn
Argh! Don't say that! Mine seems to be OK so far. -
@Edent I'm currently on app version 3.47.0.97816 and it's still working. What's the version that it ceases on ?
