I have been incredibly organised and booked my #FOSDEM travel and hotel.

@Edent read my "how to survive FOSDEM" post.
How to survive FOSDEM – Marcin Juszkiewicz
FOSDEM is 2 weeks conference in 2 days. Can be tough to survive.

@hrw that's perfect! Thank you so much
-
@Edent Supermarkets around ULB on Sunday are open only in the mornings if you’re lucky. Don’t rely on FOSDEM food trucks - they’re expensive and bad. Prepare to be people’d out. Leaving and going back to the city centre for a few hours rest is a valid option.
-
@issyl0 I will stock up on food and emotional energy
Cheers! See you there?
-
@garythewilliams @Edent, no need for MOBIB card anymore, bank contactless works these days.
-
@andrew_shadura @garythewilliams brilliant, thanks!
-
@Edent, I used to book accommodation in the centre, but discovered morning travel to be quite slow, so since the last year I'm staying close to the venue not far from the Louiza tram line, so it's still easy to go to the centre (either tram or bike to Louiza, then walk).
-
@andrew_shadura @Edent works? Yes. Costs me a bunch more? Also yes!
-
@garythewilliams @andrew_shadura
> A single fare is €2.20. This is cheaper than a paper ticket.

@Edent @andrew_shadura Depends on if your bank, like mine, is fleecing you with international transaction fees
-
@garythewilliams But wouldn't you also have to pay those fees if you purchased a paper ticket?
There are a bunch of travel credit cards which have no fee. I've got a couple and they're great.

@Edent the rooms vary from cold AF to boiling hot, try to wear layers you can shed or pile on as needed.
It gets extremely crowded in the halls between devrooms. Allow 2x as much time as you think you’ll need to get from A to B. More if you’re going from building to building.
FOSDEM Flu is no joke, even before COVID: consider masking for the event.
IIRC the food trucks don’t take credit, so have cash on hand.
It’s been a long time since I’ve gone. Hope it’s a great experience for you.

Although it is called a Café - it is a bar https://www.deliriumvillage.com/bar/delirium-cafe/
I don't know what their policy is, but I guess you have to be 18+. Sorry.

@QuadRadical I've never been - you'd best ask them directly.

The journey to #FOSDEM begins with a single Pull Request.
Update links in transportation.html by edent · Pull Request #259 · FOSDEM/website
Fix broken links, upgrade to https where possible, add link about contactless cards. Fixes #258
GitHub (github.com)
Hopefully that'll help people travelling to the event.

@Edent there is a lot of great advice so far, what I would add is if you bring a backpack, it might be best to keep it in your lap during talks (especially in room Janssen, mine was soaked in beer from a spill or more in the above rows).
This has never been a problem before (for me), but last year I was pickpocketed in the crowd outside Delirium (only a vape, luckily).
Bluetooth can be very congested so if you wear headphones make sure they can also work wired.
It is really neat, enjoy!
-
@chillicampari that's really solid advice, thanks!

@Edent @QuadRadical @plwt We don't have an age limit to enter bars/ cafes / restaurants in Belgium. Only for nightclubs. Legal drinking age for beer is 16, and 18 for hard liquor.
