so many job postings!

@[email protected] Genuinely, I have yet to see a job posting in tech right now that _isn't_ for this shit (either directly or simply one step removed).

@aud Yeah, no shit. Even many pre-existing jobs have just... turned into that as the genocide and AI continue (not to put them on the same footing in any way other than that tech as an industry seems obsessed with both).

@[email protected] RIGHT?! Exactly that. Once "regular" employers, now war profiteers and climate destroyers. Assuming they weren't already.
-
@aud Having not even basic principles but just a modicum of human decency is such a severely career limiting move, it’s disheartening.
-
@[email protected] famously unprofitable to have ethics, I'm afraid.

@aud I mean, there's no ethical *creation* under capitalism, but also things have gotten wildly *wildly* worse.
I don't blame folks for having to make tough choices throughout all of that. This shit sucks so bad.

@[email protected] yeah, me either. I'm not trying to blame people for choices unless they're the ones in charge and/or otherwise responsible for pushing things in these directions.
The fact is, we're a fucking warmongering fascist state and our economy reflects that. Fucking awful. -

@[email protected] It used to be you could get a job making hammers and only some of them might be used to murder them
Now it's like the demand for murder hammers is so high, they're hiring specifically for it. -
I can't edit the poll, but if I could, I would add "Discrimination As A Service: hiding LLMs inside everything"
-
@aud what sort of job are you looking for in terms of skill set?
-

@[email protected] Honestly, at this point, I just need something to pay the bills that isn't... morally abhorrent to me. I think I've technically 'sunk' an interview due to bringing up that I won't work with weapons manufacturers.
In terms of skillset, I'm capable of statistical analysis and data science type roles; I have extensive experience in scaling and high performance computing, as well as a new skillset in profiling applications (especially ones I'm not familiar with prior to profiling). I can do frontend work, as well. I have more scientific training than engineering (even though I don't talk about it), which means I'm particularly well suited to 'grey areas' where the outcome is known but how to get there isn't (such as improving performance or troubleshooting mysterious heisenbugs).
I just can't bring myself to work with war profiteers during the best of times, but certainly not while the government is bankrolling (and giving material goods to) a genocide. Nor scammy, climate + society destroying work like cryptocurrency or generative AI. -
@[email protected] I think I’m done with HPC; it’s all commercial applications now, it seems, which is basically oil and gas or “defense contractors”.
It’d be nice to work on problems related to opening up access to data (scientific or otherwise), which requires a skill set that includes investigating (and testing/hacking), conversion, parallel data pipelines, packaging them in a nice format, etc. I have those skills as well, though I rarely get to use or talk about them. -

@aud wish I could recommend the games industry but it seems to be doing the opposite of hiring right now you'd be a good fit for rendering
-
@[email protected] thank you! I appreciate that. I think I would be too, honestly; obviously I don't have the domain expertise (which is... you know, if they're not hiring experienced people, they're definitely not hiring for trainable staff).
-
@aud you forgot: work multiple menial labor jobs propping up a consumerism culture you aren't paid enough to be a part of, and starve anyway because everything you earn goes to your landlord.
-
So far, "regulated financial scams" is winning and I gotta hand it to tech industry on this one for creating jobs so absolutely destructive to human morality that the type of work that was once considered the sole domain of absolute amoral assholes is benign in comparison.
That's, you know. Talk about giving 110% for capitalism. We're miles beyond the destructive capitalist pioneers of the 1980s. -
I voted for "steal from artists and writers" because I'm not a good enough photographer to make a living, so I figure I might as well get paid by a tech company to steal from people who are actually accomplished. That's how it works, right? That's how I become a billionaire?
-
@[email protected] You also have to swear to uphold the tenents of capitalism and promise that if you DO become a billionaire, you will, under no circumstances, allow it to trickle down to the masses and instead simply participate in shifting large sums of money around between you and other billionaires.

@aud Wait, no ad-tech?
