further down the thread, Molly states:
newsletters are expensive to run because of mailsending, not because of hosting costs. ~70% of my cost is for bulk email.
just throwing it out into the void that this sounds silly because it is silly; bulk email sending is expensive because modern email is controlled by a cartel of the big players who bless or shun every other mail server on the planet. the paid mail sending services hoard previously blessed IP addresses and will throw you overboard at the slightest hint that you've displeased the cartel.
but if your audience happens to run their own mail servers you can run your own mail server and none of y'all have to give one whit what the cartel thinks about your practices. just saying.

and, if we want to talk about fixing the situation, it'd go a long ways towards making non-email-nerds get pissy about Google and Microsoft and Verizon and Apple keeping the email ecosystem on lockdown if folks dealt with more "yeah, I sent you an email, but Google won't deliver it because I'm just a li'l guy" friction instead of email-nerds rolling over and having a throwaway gmail they always use for talking to the rest of the world.
