This is probably the closest thing to actual journalism I've ever done.

@cameron What's the problem? Do you have any idea that a successful startup owning 80% of it's equity is amazing? and unheard of?
Dave/Standard have kept control of something after offering 12% to bootstrap/seed fund? Great work to them.
1 investor?! They haven't done any funding rounds to run a successful and profitable streaming company?! Holy shit.
Patreon has taken hundreds of millions of capital form multiple rounds of funding (holding the bag) and now have shareholders who require growth to maintain their dividends.
You're saying standard has the fiscal responsibility of their entirely company?! They deserve a award for being fucking awesome in a world of venture capitalist vampires.
Come back to me once you prove they are not PAYING the royalites to the streamers.

@shlee @cameron I don't get this sentiment. Like... Ok... What you're saying is probably correct. Good for them, probably good for the creators as well, otherwise they wouldn't go there.
But nebula is also advertising itself as THE streaming service owned by its creators, which, according to the article, is pretty much BS.
So one of their main selling points to the audience seems to be false.
Nothing you say, has anything to do with the main point of the article. -

@marcusdeh @cameron ok… standard owns nebula…
Has the writer shown who owns standard? That could have stocks or just consider the streamers staff?
They’re private, there is no requirement to prove the conditions.
Until coffeezilla does some exposuring video. You cannot assume bad faith.

@shlee @cameron if we believe this quote from the article, which seems to be from Abigail Thorn...
"“When you’ve been on Nebula for a certain amount of time you get the option to buy a piece of the parent company. Standard actually invented an entirely new kind of cooperative corporate governance to make this happen”."
... then it seems reasonable to assume that not every creator owns a part of standard. They might, eventually. But we don't know.
I think it is reasonable to be sceptical. -

@marcusdeh @cameron if they want a real scandal. Look into second wind group (ex-escapist)
That company is horrible with a 50k a month patreon.

@hazelnot @shlee @cameron is it? I mean like... people thought it was a co-op? I always thought it just meant that the people running it were in something adjacent to the video business and the people on the platform currently were allowed some decision-making power
I mean... it's not Cohost, they're not pretending to be a far left activist group, they're just currently in the stage where capitalism has not yet demanded they shoot the golden goose

@amaranth @hazelnot @cameron this is a little void posting but my original point was more “where is the capital F fraud?” And less “there are more interesting and progressive company structures”
Because the message of the blog is “something feels fishy” which leads to maybe you should cancel your subscription as subtext.
