Should there be a governance organization for the Fediverse?

@evan I'll do you one better: I think we need an equivalent of the IETF but focused on social/sociological concerns rather than technical ones
-
@evan As someone who's set up and run an instance in the past, I can tell you:
1. The structure of the fediverse and activitypub itself is about as perfect as you can get for governance. It allows a massive amount of freedom as well as the ability to be governed if you choose. It's simply rarely seen and not quite understood.
2. ActivityPub, the base protocal linking all these instances, works similar to email, where a post is simply a reply to an email and everyone commenting is cc'd, but everyone on your instance can also see everyone else's mail on that instance. "governing" ActivityPub would be like controlling email - and starting a world wide organization to do that.... talk about herding cats!Anyway. The best thing the Fediverse can do to govern is create more and more *small* instances that are specialized to people's interests.

@evan Fedi is the high seas. You answer only to your admin. You wanna be 'governed'? Join a big instance.

@evan I thik that we should first clarify what exactly "governance organization" means in this case.
-
@evan What does governance mean here?
-
@evan Yeah, I still don’t get how it specifically applies to the Fediverse. We have the W3C as the governance (or at least standards) body for the protocol. What would a “governance organization” of the Fediverse do?
-
@drahardja what an interesting question for you to think through!
-
@evan OK then.
-
@drahardja cool. It sounds like for you it would depend on what the structure of the organization was, who was involved, and so on? Maybe that's a qualified yes or a qualified no.
-
@drahardja maybe you think there's more context that I'm not sharing or something? I don't understand your questions.
-
@drahardja maybe if you can't think of what a governance organization for the Fediverse would be or do, you should answer "strong no".
-
@evan @drahardja WTF @evan
The poll is moot. There *is* a governance organization.
What is the point of the poll?
-
@pixel @drahardja which organization are you talking about?
-
@evan @drahardja The W3C?
Am I missing something?
