@mastodonmigration @blogdiva @scottmstedman I've talked to some people about it. The universal response is that Mastodon is "too fiddly." Specifically that is the most common word - really, the only repeated one.

So I'm trying to get them to enable the Bridgy app. BEAR WITH ME: if they do, and _if_ they start picking up some Mastodon/Federation followers, then _when_ BlueSky becomes untenable, they'll already have a group of people somewhere else if they feel like considering another move.

They'll _already know_ people here. That'll make the Federation the next best choice.

Or that's what I hope, anyway.

It's just frustrating that people, having gone through this experience with X, don't make it a first priority to protecting themselves from it happening again. Seems like fiddly should be a lower priority. But understand that's not how people work, which is why we are in this pickle.

Mastodon is not... complete. It has a LOT of problems. However, I still think that, long-term, it's the best bet for a social media platform.

I hope to survive long enough to see those improvements happen.

And, frankly, I find it gobs better than FB or the birdsite ever were. I just wish more of my friends from FB would migrate this way.

So how are people connecting with this bridge? I keep seeing it talked about but I'm not really understanding it. BS doesn't Federate, right?

While I do agree that largely Mastodon isn't as complicated as people make it out to be, at the same time, there are some weird quirks here that are more challenging to naviagte than on other SM sites & if we all took more of a 'be helpful' vs 'you're an idiot' approach, that might help us grow more.

At this time accounts can "bridge" to/from Bluesky, but it needs to be turned on. That is, the account needs to agree to be bridged. Here is the website: https://fed.brid.gy/

Regarding help and advice, sorry you feel like people aren't helpful. Mastodon does have some rough edges and tricks. @FediTips has a great guide (https://fedi.tips/) and can be a great help.
