"We should be reminded on this day and every day between now and the election that political leaders at the highest levels have a fundamental responsibility to discourage a climate of violence."

@wdlindsy
The Ds don't seem to need reminding. -
@72mz You're right, they don't.

@noodlemaz I don't read the words "unstable" and "mentally ill" as equivalent terms.
-
@72mz I totally agree.

@wdlindsy that's my question then. What do you think it means? I think that's what most would mean by it.
-
William Lindsey :toad:replied to Noodlemaz last edited by
@noodlemaz I can’t speak for most people, but when I hear the word “unstable,” I don’t automatically think “ mentally ill.” I certainly agree with you that mentally ill people should not be stigmatized.

@wdlindsy but what do you mean when you use it? I'm genuinely interested
-

@noodlemaz When I speak of someone as unstable, I very seldom intend to say that person is mentally ill. The latter is a medical designation that I wouldn't presume to make about someone whose behavior strikes me as unstable. People can show all sorts of signs of instability at stressful times in their lives without being mentally ill.

@wdlindsy fair enough, thanks for elaborating on your own usage.
For me, when I see other people saying it, it seems to be a euphemism in the realm of other mental illness-stigmatising terms like mad, crazy, insane, batsh*t, et cetera.I'm glad it's not what you meant in this case. But I'd maybe consider as well the environment your usage sits in, and whether your intent is matched by how it's received? Food for thought perhaps.
Have a good aft/eve as applies where you are -

@noodlemaz You say, "I'm glad it's not what you meant in this case."
You're responding to an excerpt from an article by Jay Kuo who used the word "unstable."
I'm not the one who used it.
