I get very annoyed at how when someone wants to learn photography they’re just inundated with gear fetishism
Or jargon. Sure, at some point you should learn about exposure and f stops and shutter speeds, but it is far more important and interesting to develop an eye for composition and more importantly, what you’re trying to say with the image or images

Despite my profile picture, you do not need a Leica. Nobody needs a Leica.
These photos were from my phone, which is much more capable than many cameras I have owned.
At some point you’ll come across a camera or camera system that really speaks to you, that helps you tell stories with images better. Mine is a Leica (but I dont need it).
You also don’t need some other hyped camera either.

@skinnylatte I originally thought when I got my driving licence I would also get either a DSLR or a better compact as I could visit all these places and take photos; but then realised that cars are hecking expensive to run which reduces any money I might have to spend on cameras (had to shell out > £300 for tyres recently) so tend to take more photos using my mobile phone (to be fair the Sony mobile phones do have decent cameras in them)

@vfrmedia I’m looking into getting a 4x5 camera when I get a car. We are very different. Ahahaha
-
@skinnylatte My view is that the only gear you need to do photography is a device that lets you control exposure time. Everything else is bonuses.

@skinnylatte it's all about the TLR tbh. pretty minimal equipment to worry about, very high quality images produced.

@diedofheartbreak @vfrmedia there’s a serviced one on Photrio that’s very nice. A bit more $ than on eBay, but it’s been fully serviced by mark hama

@skinnylatte True enough. But I'm at an age where I'm starting to think about experiences I want to have before the end. I came up with a list of three cameras I want to own and get to know: Hasselblad 500cm, Leica M3, and Deardorff 8x10. I have the Hasselblad. Leica is next.

@thereisnocat that’s different from. Someone starting out and just buying gear and not shooting
You develop a taste for the gear, but the gear doesn’t give you the taste

@KenSwe nice!

@skinnylatte Thank you for this reminder. I always feel like I shouldn't "waste" shots but then I never take them.
Damn imposter syndrome.Everything I saw at Maker Faire over the weekend was "fail to learn, learn to fail, then succeed" so I need to work to take that to heart.

@ScotttSee i would love to see your photos!

@skinnylatte I haven't been shooting much since I moved a couple years ago (lots of work work and home work ) but here are some from before-covid https://lychee.lastcallphotography.com/gallery
