So, I don't watch much YouTube, but I just dug into some instructional videos and had to watch a bunch of ads. Does everyone get the "tactical" products, or is it because they know I'm a middle age white guy?
-
@the_etrain i think they might be suspicious of it based off ISP/location, and maybe they have your age range of neighborhood and what not
-
@the_etrain i read this as a literal question but if it was rhetorical my b my b

@snarl
No, I'm really asking. -
@the_etrain @snarl ad networks track/deannonymize you across sites by pooling data they collect on users, tracking cookies, IPs/IP ranges, profiling device types/resolution/browser type and more to serve ads based on whatever their internal model is.
as snarl said, this might be based on relatively precise location, IP, assumed age, what you've searched for on any site that uses google adsense, facebook ads, and hundreds of others.
-
@the_etrain @snarl it's also very likely they do targeted ads based on who they think the audience watching the videos is. even if you're watching entirely anodyne making/crafting content, you will often be served prepper/right-wing/off-grid grifter slop.
if you're blocking ads and browser/canvas profiling and block shitty channels it's better, but sometimes still bad. if you watch firearms or military history videos, it's even worse.
