A fledgling (I think) Blue Jay literally just dropped into the garden. No mama bird around making a fuss over it though….

EDIT: Confirmed to be a Barn Swallow.

It turns out this is a Barn Swallow, and from my research it's nearly impossible for even a professional wildlife rehabilitator to replicate its dietary habits because the parent feeds them insects nonstop. Complicating things more, it's protected under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act.
For now, I'm trying to keep it safe inside an open-top cardboard box with some straw bedding. Hopefully the parent will catch its scent and come back to care for it soon, or it will fly away and be safe

OMG!! So, an adult barn swallow landed on the grass, acting like it was looking for something. I let the little guy out of the box but scared away the adult. Meanwhile, the baby started scurrying towards the bushes. A few minutes later, the adult returned and the baby instantly changed direction and headed towards it!
I have a good feeling about this. I'm certain I'm watching a reunion.

@killyourfm this is quite the saga!

@dm this little bird derailed my entire day. But I’m not complaining.

@killyourfm I think the term you're looming for is "enhanced"

@dm You know what? You're right.
