@aarbrk FWIW, in Latin America, there was a massive wave of the Conquistadors burning Aztec and Mayan codices for being "witchcraft books" several centuries before 1906. Ironically, a number of Inca archives seem to only have survived because in the minds of the religious bigots, quipu didn't look like books. Unfortunately, modern linguists now have only a limited idea about how to read them.
