It always cracks me up that ‘bat’ is just spelled ‘bat’. Like they just don’t have a character for it. But it is one of the words I would use the most / hear my parents use frequently. Like in every other sentence.
Recently I did a few classes to learn to read / write Taiwanese. Even though I read / write Mandarin, which helps, it’s a whole other thing. There are many terms I know how to say, but only just learned to write (because they don’t really exist in Mandarin)

@[email protected] That's pretty cool. I have only ever used Hokkien in oral form, never seen it written before. It feels natural as well, because I could easily pronounce the words out loud just looking at both the Romanised form alongside the Chinese characters.

@rewarp Taiwan has a recent push to standardized the writing. Romanization and writing. Our grandparents probably won’t recognize it
