“I used to dream about working at gawker. I used to dream about a job, right. I used to dream of labor. And that’s whack, don’t do that!”

“There is a real crack in the foundations of the current order right now. and I genuinely believe that if we each brought our weird talents and gifts to bear on this problem and treated the problem of making better networks our problem and not something we’re just hoping someone else will figure out, we would have this in the bag.”
this was my favorite talk!!

“Each day’s work is an act of faith in the dark, putting down a little more knowledge to stand on. We still can’t see the other side.
“If we want better networks, then we need to understand—as concretely and as close to ground as possible—what has actually happened to us, and then we need to use that knowledge to try new things in a deliberate and purposeful way with painstaking attention to the human costs of our experiments.”

“Projects like COVID tracking keep demonstrating that one factor in mounting a collective response to crisis is a social internet that isn't trying to kill us. So I think the answer can't be that we cede everything above ground to billionaires and demagogues and predatory forces. But I also don't think it can be for us to keep accepting this poisonous status quo the networks have backed us into.
Which leaves us with only one option, which is: we fix the fucking networks.”

“10 minutes is just not enough time to break down the nitty gritty of a problem or propose solutions so I’ll leave you with this: it got better. For a handful of you, maybe like two or three people in the audience, you should hear this. It does get better. This did not define me.”
Sarah Jeong at #xoxofest on the years-long harassment campaign she faced
Was really glad to see her saying this. Lot of xoxo talks about how viciously bad the online harassment gets. But it -does- get better.

Dan Olson at #xoxofest really struck a chord with me talking about his anxiety spiral as an artist dealing with envy: “I could do that. Why am I not doing that? What could possibly go wrong?”
So many projects I’ve never finished because of this consistent blend of envy and arrogance and discontentment. Trying to make projects Good like the Good Things I admire instead of just making the thing for the sake of the thing!

“Pandemics are collective problem. you can’t make then into a hero’s journey, it won’t work”
“Whether we fail at pandemics or not is a choice”

“It turns out that Americans don’t like Asian people talking about collectivism, or British people telling them what to do.”
“I often joked that Ed Yong became a character of the pandemic — a character who’s only loosely based on me and who I occasionally get to write the dialogue for.”
“My therapist (who I got late in this process) pointed out that there are many similarities in our work, but only one of us has training.” (!!!)

“This thing we do where you have a random thought and broadcast it to millions of strangers, I look back on this like building houses with asbestos.”
Ed Yong at #xoxofest shows us the rules he followed during his reporting. They didn’t save him from burning out though!!
