Dems have a habit of crowning the milquetoast instead of letting the bold run (e.g., Bernie vs Hillary)
good lesson to not run a very old candidate who's just centerist? and then last-minute swap for centerist++?

so it's not as simple as I imply at first blush
a picture perfect democrat won't win where an honest progressive might
