The last few weeks I’ve been picking at a scab:
I get so little from my mastodon feed.
This is less a reflection of the individuals I follow than it is the larger discourse reflected by the many retoots.
Everyday folks are foaming at the mouth on shit I could not get less of a fuck about. I cannot imagine dedicating any recurring synaptic activity to Mozilla’s clown car, but it’s constant here.
So why do I come back? I think the answer is: the reanimated corpse of TweetBot, Ivory.

For more than a decade I used TweetBot to understand the world.
The ongoing feed of Happening was like an extension of consciousness.
So reflexively I reach for it.
But instead of a feed reflecting broad experiences, current events, and friendships…
I’m getting a temporally displaced spray of like Slashdot comments, with a few friends interspersed in between.
Poor nutrition.

@danilo one of the first things I do after following someone is disable their reposts from my timeline

I think my deep sigh is rooted at watching the impotence of it all.
The height of Mastodon’s wailing is matched only by its ineffectiveness. Nothing is particularly changed by any of this gnashing of teeth.
AI marches on, ad tech reaches deeper, no one notices anything.
Twitter changed the fortunes of politicians and corporations, often in the space of hours and days.
Mastodon is Abe Simpson yelling at a cloud.

@danilo yeah, the impotence of it is pretty discouraging. Especially because that impotence seems to be willful, maybe even by design. There's an appetite for what this place could become. It could be a lever for popular democratic power in the same way Twitter was. But so much energy is spent on refusing to let it happen.
Sigh

@jenniferplusplus yeah so much of what sucks is some version of the cartoon of shoving the stick into the bike wheel
Lack of cultural dynamism has many roots but they all lead back to poor platform stewardship
