Sarah Scire reports that publications endorsing Harris, including the Philadelphia Inquirer and The Guardian, are capitalizing on the controversy Jeff Bezos has caused by yanking a Washington Post endorsement of Harris.

"I’d hoped (forlornly) that all major outlets would see the rush for the exits at the Post and start asking themselves whether they’re taking their own subscribers for granted. Seems they did not."

@wdlindsy Yay! Phila. Inquirer deserves new subscribers and doesn't have a "Bad Billionaire" model of ownership. The company is owned by The Philadelphia Foundation, a nonprofit organization in Philadelphia. Philanthropist Gerry Lenfest bought it in 2014 and donated it in 2016 to that non-profit. With new money, they could have more resources for investigative reporting.
Bezos could donate WaPo too. But the Bad Billionaire model prevents it, I guess.

@wdlindsy So far, chewy.com and my local grocery store are picking up my canceled Amazon subscriptions.

"Bezos is right to worry about waning trust in the media. But he does not understand that people like him are in large part responsible for this distrust, and that cosplaying as a pundit while pandering to the worst-faith actors in American politics is not a plan for restoring it."

Jeff Bezos Doesn’t Understand That He Is the Problem
Brace yourself, but The Washington Post’s owner’s decision to destroy his paper’s credibility in order to restore trust in journalism may have a few flaws in its logic.

"Readers do not distrust opinion journalists for forming opinions and sharing them with the public. They distrust condescending, ham-fisted plutocrats who have no blessed idea what they’re talking about, moving fast and breaking stuff."

"In the final week of the presidential campaign, the country’s two most prominent newspapers extended into a second day their credulous coverage of Republicans’ fake outrage over President Biden’s 'garbage' comment.
The NYT and WaPo each made it a front-page story in Thursday’s editions, with above-the-fold, prime-real-estate treatment."

Kurtz quotes New York Times Pitchbot, which writes,
"Biden calling Trump supporters 'garbage' in a webcam interview is a moral outrage. Here’s why Trump calling Harris supporters 'garbage' at a rally is not."

@wdlindsy That's the best news I've heard all day. I've been looking for a new news source to pay for - had already walked away from the NYT and now the WaPo over their coverage. Guardian had become one of my main online sources and their US coverage is quite good. Now if only weekly alt newspapers hadn't died - because there's very limited coverage of local news, even in a city the size of Atlanta.

@wdlindsy Just here to say that I canceled my New York Times subscription in 2016 because “her emails” and WaPo the minute Will Lewis was named its publisher. I haven’t ordered from Amazon or subscribed to Prime in years. Please join me, good people who haven’t done so yet. #BoycottTheOligarchs #ShopLocal #SupportNonprofitMedia

@wdlindsy @xerophile OK, so maybe Joe shouldn't have called Trump and his followers, brown shirt henchmen and acolytes "garbage." Agreed. Calling them "trash" or "dregs" or "rubbish" would have been enough. #garbage #WaPo

The News Media Have Learned Nothing
The election is just days away, and reporters are making the worst possible choices.

"As the election approaches, the reporting gets worse — policy issues are pushed aside, the most ludicrous micro-controversies are given front-page treatment, more and more attention is paid to increasingly useless polls and pointless speculation, and they ride into election day on a wave of triviality. ...
The most disheartening thing about all this is how it shows our elite media have learned nothing."

"All this, finally, is why America may soon collapse. Because a POTUS who said a very reasonable thing had that thing transmogrified into contemptible disinformation by two unscrupulous far-right billionaires, and a bunch of corporate media outlets under the thumb of unscrupulous billionaires ran with what they saw as a very lucrative non-story-cum-story."

/11FACT CHECK: No, President Biden Didn’t Call Donald Trump Supporters “Garbage”
The viral lie—spread to hundreds of millions by Trump and Elon Musk and the subject of a bizarre publicity stunt by Trump aimed at making voters forget what happened at Madison Square Garden—is silly.

"As ever, all the money in the situation laid on the side of the lie, not the truth. The occasional independent media publication—The Drudge Report and, if it can be said, Proof—getting to the truth of the matter notwithstanding, it really seems as though the truth of any matter is currently the least valuable currency in America."

"But you want to know something that is true? Just last month, Donald Trump declared at a rally that 'the people that surround [Harris], they’re scum—they’re scum—and they want to take down our country. They’re absolute garbage.'
That really did happen.
And you know who just analogized America—the entire United States—to a 'garbage can' in his 'closing argument' to voters?
If you guessed Donald Trump, you’re right."

Lincoln Project helpfully provides us with a beaucoup of times when the Garbage Can Man Trump has called Kamala Harris' supporters — and America itself — garbage.
I'm continuing to hashtag New York Times and Washington Post as I post this item because both media outlets should be royally shamed, though they're evidently well beyond shame.

@wdlindsy Someone posted (somewhere) a message for Mark Cuban, asking him to start a newspaper and hire those who have left their jobs.
I'd subscribe. (We're still trying to figure out what subscriptions to start next year.)
